Discover Leiden's art, history and hidden stories on a private walking tour — just you, your group, and a local guide who brings the city's past to life.
Discover the Leiden You Won't Find in a Guidebook

Leiden's history runs deeper than its postcard views — a 400-year-old botanical garden, wall poems scattered across the city in a dozen languages, churches that have watched Leiden change for centuries. The Cultural Tour is a private, 4-5 hour walk built around all of it: just you, your group and a local guide, moving at your own pace from one stop to the next.

Your own pace: No large groups or waiting around. Enjoy each stop at a pace that suits you.
A local guide: Your guide knows the stories behind Leiden’s churches, museums and wall poems that most visitors walk straight past.
Real Leiden history: Museum De Lakenhal, Hortus Botanicus, a traditional windmill, two of Leiden’s main churches and the city’s wall poems — all woven into one afternoon.
Your group, your experience: Whether you’re travelling as a couple, a family or a group of friends, the day is shaped around you.
Flexible & personal: Want to linger at a museum or skip a stop? Just ask.
Leiden's history is scattered across the city in pieces most visitors walk straight past — a 400-year-old botanical garden, a windmill still standing after centuries, churches that have watched Leiden grow. Your guide leads you through Museum De Lakenhal and the Hortus Botanicus, stops at a traditional Dutch windmill, and takes you past two of the city's main churches. Along the way, keep an eye out for the wall poems tucked into Leiden's streets, each one telling its own story. The afternoon winds down with dinner at the historic Prentenkabinet.

The Cultural Tour isn't the only way to experience Leiden with us. If food and drink are more your thing, the Culinary Tour takes you through gin bars, chocolate makers and a classic Leiden dinner. Want something more active? The Active Leiden Experience combines cycling, paddleboarding and a bit of adventure. Prefer the water? Our sister site Discover Canal Cruises runs private boat tours through Leiden's canals.
The Cultural Tour starts at Beestenmarkt in Leiden, about a 5-minute walk from Leiden Central Station.
During the Cultural Tour you'll visit Museum De Lakenhal, step into the Hortus Botanicus, the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, and stop at one of Leiden's traditional windmills. Your guide also takes you past St Peter's Church and Hooglandse Church, pointing out the wall poems scattered through the city's streets along the way, before settling you in for dinner at the historic Prentenkabinet to finish.
The Cultural Tour lasts 4–5 hours. At the end, your guide steps back so you can enjoy dinner privately and at your own pace. If you wish to have a shorter or longer tour, send us a message and let's see how we can best accommodate your needs.
Entry to Museum De Lakenhal, Hortus Botanicus, a traditional Dutch windmill, St Peter’s Church and Hooglandse Church, Leiden’s wall poems along the way, and dinner at the historic Prentenkabinet are all included in the Cultural Tour.
The Cultural Tour is available in English and Dutch. Our guides speak both, so you don't have to select a language during booking.
On all our tours we suggest to dress for the weather and bring comfortable shoes for walking through the city.
Plans can change and unforeseen things can happen; we understand! You can cancel or reschedule the Cultural Tour free of charge up to 48 hours before departure.
Please let us know about any dietary requirements or allergies in advance so we can make sure every stop on the tour works for you.
Leiden’s best historic sites aren’t always obvious from the street — a wall poem tucked around a corner, a museum entrance easy to walk past. A guided Cultural Tour solves that: your guide already knows the stories and the route, so you can spend the afternoon exploring rather than navigating. If food is more your thing, our Culinary Tour covers that ground instead, and the Active Leiden Experience is there for a more physical day out. Prefer to see the city from the water? Our sister site Discover Canal Cruises runs private boat tours through Leiden’s canals.
We advise arriving at Beestenmarkt 10 minutes before departure so we can maximize your time on the tour.
The Cultural Tour is private for 2 to 6 people. Have a larger group? Send us a message and we’ll see what we can arrange.
Yes, the Cultural Tour runs all year round.
The Cultural Tour goes ahead in most weather. We recommend dressing for the conditions; if the weather becomes genuinely unsafe, we’ll contact you to reschedule.
We’re happy to create a custom, personal experience together with you — just tell us what you have in mind.
There’s a lot of history packed into Leiden, from Museum De Lakenhal and the Hortus Botanicus to its churches and wall poems. A Cultural Tour where your guide already knows what’s worth the stop is the easiest way to see it all in one afternoon. If you’d rather eat and drink your way through the city, our Culinary Tour covers that, and the Active Leiden Experience is there for something more physical. You can also see the city from the water with our sister site, Discover Canal Cruises.
Tickets for the Cultural Tour can be ordered through our website by clicking on the booking button under the tours. The button will open up a calendar where you can select your preferred date and time, select how many guests will be joining the tour, and select any other tour-specific options. In case of special dietary requirements, please contact us.
Yes, during the Cultural Tour you’ll be accompanied by a local guide, who’s happy to answer questions along the way. For dinner, your guide steps back so you and your group can enjoy the meal privately and at your own pace.
